Really Smart-Stuff

1. Dr. Russ Hurlburt, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, produced the following
original research on the contents of ‘stream-of-consciousness’. All the stuff that is going on in your mind 24 hours a day – all kinds of thoughts, ideas and dialogue flash through our mind. Some of it is brilliant, and unless we record it on-the-spot, is gone-forever, and some of it is garbage - to justify ourselves in an argument.

The name and original work for ‘stream-of-consciousness’ was by Professor William James, at Harvard, 1890, and is still cited.

Dr. Hurlburt reported in 2001, and had published in, ‘Trends in Cognitive Neuroscience’ the following:

a) Subvocalization (dialogue) constitutes 32% of our stream-of-consciousness.
b) Visualizations (single pictures or mental-movies), 25%
c) Symbol-free intuition (snap ideas and creativity), 25%
d) Emotional reactions (anger, anxiety, fear, frustration and pleasure), is 18%.

So What?

The average college graduate in he U.S. hears ‘the-still-small-voice’ reading
the text to us as we study and learn – 100% of time. It wastes over 90 minutes
daily of reading-time, and can be reduced by two-thirds for greater productivity.
SpeedLearning graduates all-but eliminate the ‘dialogue’ of subvocalization by
reading too fast for the Speed of Speech. We read at the Speed-of-Sight, and can
complete and remember three-books, articles and reports in the time others can
finish even one. One of our core-strategies is reduction of our ‘sub-vox’.

2. Why Our Own Voice is So Vital to Learning

If you want to become a super-star in school, and take your personal-growth to
the ‘genius’ level, you must summarized the gist of what you are learning on a
daily basis into a Mini-Recorder. It is not the beauty of your own voice that
does it, but the fact that it is in fact - your ‘own’ voice. Your own voice has a
separate neuropathway in your brain for instant recognition because your brain
‘believes’ and takes orders from your voice – over and beyond anyone else’s voice.

“What you say is the law and indisputable because you are the ‘boss-of-you’. When
you want to add something new to permanent long-term memory, your voice makes
it memorable and an order to your brain. Not your mother, father, significant-other
has the power over your brain like your own-voice. Use it on a daily basis for
whatever you want to learn by dictating and listening to your mini-recorder.

It turns you into a brilliant-star, and raises your grades to Dean’s List if you do it
regularly and long-term.

The special neuropathway located in your brain for recognizing voices is
the Superior-Temporal-Sulcus, good-old STS. “Sulcus” is < L for trench or furrow.
Ranked #1 is your own voice, with the instruction to act on its instructions.

Check out the “Wheaties” promotions for 150 words on why you ‘luv’ Wheaties,
breakfast-of-champions. It works because when you write – you ‘hear’ the words
in your ‘mind’s-ear’.

The specific neuroconnection for recognizing ‘faces’ and relating them to identity
is the Occipito-Temporal-Gyrus, also called the “Fusiform-Gyrus”. “Gyrus” is < L
for ring.

Yes, your own face is the most important identification to your brain, and
all the other faces in your life are reconstructed at the OTG too.

3. How to Ace Lectures

When you attend a lecture – always take to sets of notes, the first on the core
ideas of the speaker, and the second – the stream-of-consciousness information-
processing flashing past your mind. When you list on paper all the
Dialogue, pictures, intuitions and emotions your right-brain is processing – the
mere awareness of them ends their existence as a “distraction” from the speaker’s
talk. Additionally, a dynamic idea or two can be captured before it disintegrates.

Yes, summarize the gist of the lecture and the ‘stream-of-consciousness’ into your
mini-recorder for subsequent feedback.

4. What Are the Key Strategies of SpeedLearning?

First, is learning to ‘divide’ (chunk) the sentences while reading left-to-right,
dextrosinisral (right-to-left), that’s right, reading in reverse, and while reading ‘obliquely’, “Z for Zorro”.

Second, exercises to enlarge the “Percpetual-Span” of the muscles of your
‘peripheral-vision’. The average college graduate reads one-word-at-a-time because
his visual ‘perceptual-span’ is only six-letters at a time in the ‘foveal-centralis’.

SpeedLearner can read using much of the entire capacity of 6-35 letters simultaneously called ‘perceptual-span’ of the foveal-centralis, the area of the retina
with the sharpest acuity of reading focus. We read three-words per fixation, unlike the snailer’s one-word, and we can read and comprehend up to six-words with each
eye-stop on the sentence.

If you read only sinistrodextro – left-to-right, you are wasting up to two-hours daily
in what is called – “blind-flow”, while SpeedLearners use “trace-flow” to save up to
three-hours of reading time – daily. Our brain is capable of reading both left-to-right, and right-to-left (with full comprehension), and ‘obliquely’, also known as
‘diagonally’. These two-strategies – change you from a struggling reading who processes information – like-a-snail, to SpeedLearning – reading like a ‘master’
scholar.

Beginner’s Luck

Yes, Virginia, there really is a logical reason why first-timers without experience
and often with limited cognition, ace the situation and circumstances.

The less rules we have in mind – and simply permit our right-brain to offer its input
of intuition, pattern-recognition, imagination and creativity, the great access we have to new approaches that are original and often are very effective.

We are not advocating ‘ignorance’, merely ‘getting-in-the-flow, in-the-zone, in order
to create ‘peak-performances’. They occur only when we include our right-brain’s
input into the equation instead of solely relying on our left-brain skills of order and
logical skills.

Try a ‘cold-reading’ and let your right-brain push-the-buttons based on feelings and
emotions, spatial-skills, and on-the-spot decision-making. Brilliant writing, acting and even testing often results. Learn the core-points and then ‘fling-it-out’.

One last bit of info for you to process – our conscious mind handles 16 bits of information per second. Sound like a lot, right?

Our non-conscious mind processes “eleven-million” bits of information every second. This includes what our senses are reporting, the behavior of our motor-cortex, muscle-activity, and all our emotions. Remember, all of this is on ‘auto-pilot’, so our conscious-mind can devote itself to ‘cognition’ and maybe creativity.
Integrate both conscious and non-conscious brains and we have the best of both worlds.

Thanks for listening.

The Transactional ‘Smile’ Rules

Are you like Pollyanna – and find a ‘silver-lining’ in every cloud,
or closely resemble the Fortune 500 CEO who finds a disruptive ‘cloud’
in every silver-lining? Celebrate or criticize?

One is your ‘dominant’ state-of-mind and rules your life’s decisions.
The answer is your map of the territory – and often tilts decisions to
success and even – long-life.

Smiling

How many types of smiles are there?

1. Raising the sides of your ‘mouth’ – called the ‘Pan-American’ smile, named
after the stewardesses on the now defunct airline.

2. Squeezing the sides of your ‘eyes’, and called the ‘signal’ smile.

3. Tightening and uplifting the right-side of your mouth and right-eye
simultaneously, and called the ‘smarmy’ smile.

4. The ‘Duchenne-Smile’: simultaneously raising both-sides of your mouth and
crinkling both-sides of your eyes into a full-fledge smile.

The ‘Duchenne (Do-shen) Smile’ is named for the French scientist who
researched the physiology of smiling for thirty-years, and in 1862 published “The Mechanics of Facial Expression”. It is the Duchenne-Smile that is the
genuine, authentic and echt-smile that affects the emotions of other people - and often leads to success and enhanced health.

It requires the use of the muscles on both sides of your eyes – called the
Pars Lateralis facial muscles, in addition to the muscles on the lateral-
sides of your mouth.

Endorphins

Only one of the four smiles causes a cascade of endorphins – the brain-juice of
pleasure that accompanies sex, success and peak-experiences – to flow.
Endorphins are peptides resembling opiates that flow to reduce stress and
pain by producing the emotion of pleasure, joy and happiness.

The word – endorphin – links endogenous (within), and morphine (the drug).
Endorphins are our natural high – our brain-morphine, and they flow when
we feel good about ourselves and accomplishments. These brain-chemicals
spike us with a lightning-bolt as a reward , and keep us coming-back for more.

Do we study, practice and rehearse for ‘success’ itself, or for the emotions and
feelings of getting an ‘A’ from the instructor, the promotion from the CEO, or a
kiss from that significant-other?
Do endorphins flow because we imagine the reaction of meaningful-others, or
exclusively from the ritualistic reward? We want-and-need our natural high.

Consider the intentional flashing of your Duchenne-Smile as a precursor and
trigger (cue), for the cascade of endorphins. Do-it-and-they-will – come!.

Law of As-If

In 1896 Professor William James at Harvard, a physician and scientist, proposed
his principle of As-If. He suggested that if we acted as-if, thought-and-believed
as-if, and emotionally-felt as-if, and simultaneously – mentally-visualized
(imagined), as-if we were already the recipient of our goal (burning-desire),
our mind would lead-us to our desired-target.

For the next seventy-five years only the gullible and the ‘gullor’ (trickster),
subscribed to the Law of As-If.
It was another professor at Harvard – Stephen Kosslyn – thirty years ago who
popularized the “Reality Simulation Principle”, based on the scientific evidence
that two-thirds of the same brain modules are involved in mental-imagery – as
well-as visual-perception.

“…the same objects seen in a mental image can have the same impact on the
mind and body that the actual-object would have. My notion is that once the
brain systems are engaged, they don’t know where the impetus came from.”

Dr. Kosslyn went on to describe how mental-practice – imagining doing
something - recruits most of the brain mechanisms that would guide the same
nerves and muscles used in physical-practice.

In the 21st century, many golf – tennis – and football professionals, even Nascar
drivers, invoke the law of As-If imagining - in addition to their physical hours
on the field or track. These pros credit ‘as-if’ imaging with influencing their
athletic and financial success.

It was the use of fMRIs (functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery) scans, starting
in the 1990s, that validated the Law of As-If (Reality-Simulation-Principle), from
soft to a hard-science. These brain-scans indicate that the same nerves and
muscles are indeed activated during mental-visualization – as during physical-
practice on-the-field.

Health and Wealth

Do these identical principles apply to our goals of personal-growth and the
attainment of our burning-desires?
Is our state-of-mind, (attitude), the glue of critical-mass - leading to our chain-
reaction of accomplishment?

Can the As-If Principle-and-visualizations - help activate the healing-process
of body and mind?

Will it turn mediocre-students into “A” scholars with incredible long-term
memories?

Initial research is extremely promising and we recommend you create your
own ‘as-if’ experiments for acing exams - presentations and winning- interviews

Certain Wall Street executives of our acquaintance use ‘as-of’ imaging – for
to earn wads of filthy-lucre, promotions and to cement relationships.
The step-by-step process is held under the seal-of-confidentiality.

Is the creative-element the visualization or the physical and mental
transformation of acting-feeling-believing-thinking as-if we were successful?

What we do know is that - you are the Boss of You!

Mind Experiments

What if you spent five-minutes daily in meditative-relaxation and mentally
visualized in as great detail as possible – in living color – the career – home –
relationship of your dreams?

What if you ‘simultaneously’ - think, believe, act and feel
as-if you already own these tangible and intangible goals?

Would your mood, attitude and state-of-mind improve? Would you
stand-taller, wear a Duchenne-smile on your face, and see opportunities and
dare - where others fear-to-tread?

N.B. Our ‘mood’ changes how we evaluate existing circumstances, people,
and what is possible, and-subject to our influence and persuasion.

There is now replicated scientific-proof that these practices offer your brain a
roadmap to follow - causing significant improvements in your emotional-
intelligence. Some believe these brain-experiments act like a traffic-cop and
push-traffic to track your burning-desires through cues and triggers.

The Impact of the Duchenne-Smile and As-If

Can you flash your Duchenne-Smile for 15 seconds at-a-time?

Test it – only one-in-one-hundred - have the DWE – Directed Willful Effort –
the power of your mental-force – to practice the Duchenne-Smile for even
half-minute.

Remember – though smiling is an involuntary emotion, choosing
to voluntarily manufacture your Duchenne-Smile – produces positive results
in our body and mind, and influences and persuades others to our ideas.

This behavior links us with the Law of Liking, and shifts our brain
from Beta cycles-per-second - to Alpha Hz.. The result is a release of stress,
excitement of our immune-system, and a personal mood-change and one that
affects all our relationships.

Hundreds of graduates who daily - invoke the influence of the Duchenne-Smile
would ‘not-leave-home-without-it’.

The resultant release of endorphins can enhance your health by energizing your
immune-system, and some believe enhance your life-span. Your authentic-smile
absolutely will change your mood, and state-of-mind and for students – improve
your memory, concentration and concentration.

Your homework is to flash your echt-smile during the course of your day.
When? On wakening – arriving at your office – prior to lunch – at 3 p.m.,
and prior to sleep.

How long?
Ten-seconds is good – fifteen-second – magnificent – and twenty-
seconds – can be life-changing.

Some who have gone on a regimen of ‘Duchenne-Smiling’ – report virtual
instantaneous improvement at school, the workplace and in relationships.
Others report that daily practice of both the righteous ‘smile,’ and the activation
of the ‘As-If’ principle and visualization - for a few minutes daily - for 21 days –
produces results so extraordinary - they are fearful of sharing the knowledge
with us and others.

Too far-fetched? We suggest all true contrarians conduct their own
mind-experiments - and then decide.

It Works Because

Our research indicates that part of influencing and persuading your brain
to search-out the target-goals of your burning-desires - is produced by our
ability to create positive expectations and trust-in-the-unfolding. It is a
temporary suspension of negative-prediction and skepticism

There is one requirement – we must focus our attention-span. We all
have the volition to decide in favor of delayed-gratification, and ignore our desire
for immediate-gratification. The Law of 21 requires a break-in period of change,
and we must decide to practice for twenty-one consecutive days.

Those of us with impatience – some wrongly call it limited attention-span - require
some assistance in conjuring the benefits that turn-on our dedicated-efforts.
Find your ‘burning-desires’, and visualize how you would feel with that new
promotion – magnificent-residence – emotional-relationship. It’s your choice to
to do the same behaviors while expecting a different-result or to add new-
strategies to your repertoire – for improved potentialities.

Another Strategy For Positive Personal-Growth

Have you heard of Nostril-Cross-Laterals?

It entails balancing our left and right-brains (hemispheres) in order to remove
100% dominance by our left-brain. This exercise releases stress and focuses
powerful concentration for learning at-school and at-the-office.

The formula is inhaling in six (6) short breaths to fill your lungs; holding your
breath for a count of one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, and three-one-
thousand; and exhaling your breath - in six (6) short-releases - and ‘alternate’.

It starts with your left forefinger closing-off your left-nostril and inhaling-
holding-exhaling, through your right-nostril six-three-six- and alternate.

It continues with your right forefinger closing off your right-nostril, and inhaling-
holding-exhaling exclusively through your left-nostril six-three-six – and
alternate. Alternating results in a balance of your left and right hemispheres.

Those who use Nostril-Cross-Laterals daily for 2-3 minutes at a time –
twice-a-day – report deep relaxation, a reduction of stress, and improvement
in their cognitive-undertakings at school and career.

Creativity-Intuition and Brilliance

Nostril-Cross-Laterals positively affect our breathing-patterns, heart-beat, blood-
circulation, and excites our immune-system. It is capable of releasing a flood of the
peptide – endorphins - to create a mental and physical reward – a sense of
pleasure.

When we get a reward - feel pleasure – we tend to produce peak-performances. We
recommend using the reward of pleasure - as a cue and trigger-mechanism for
future success.

Does it work because of curiosity – added to a withdrawal of skepticism?

Do you have to understand the Placebo-Effect - for it to advance healing?

If you are of a scientific-bent – test one - or all ‘three’ SpeedBraining strategies.

Coda: “What your inner eye sees – your brain is bound to – believe.
What your brain produces as a feeling – your mind is bound to - attract.”

Speed Reading: SmartAsses Rule!

SmartAsses Rule!

  1. Evelyn Wood was a school teacher a generation ago - who left her mark.

She dressed the part, spoke in a whisper and never offended anyone during

her eighty-six years. More importantly – she was devoted to her students and

associates. I know – I was one of them.

She was a devout Mormon, but kept it to herself. She created

the field of speed reading, and she taught her friends about human relations.

  1. She did not divide the planet into those who were ‘ascending’, and those

destined to ‘descend’ for their just-rewards. She did have her own unique

classification for us down here.

  1. “There are SmartAsses and DumAsses, with a hundred DAs for each

SA - because SmartAsses have to be made, while DumAsses are often

born that way.”

  1. Now Webster’s definition of ‘smartass’ – an annoying person who makes a show of their knowledge – ostentation-by-the-erudite, just didn’t cut it for

Evelyn.

  1. “SmartAsses figure out how to manipulate the system – and become successful in relationships – financial affairs – and personal-growth, and really enjoy all aspects of their lives. And they stay healthy too.”

Wait! Manipulation is influencing-and-persuading folks, organizations and even government - to help you meet your goals.

You do that all-day, every-day, and so do the rest of us – right?

Manipulation is not exploiting folks – which is taking unfair advantage,

of a person, organization or situation – for personal gain. The operative

word is unfair – and you know the meaning of ‘unfair’ when you see it

in action.

  1. “How do you recognize a SmartAss in order to avoid the DumAsses?”,

I asked.

“Guess which one has a smile on their face a-mile-wide, even when they

sleep? They intentionally smile like a grinning-baboon because they have

discovered and been taught – smiling changes your brain wiring.

Scientific research proves smiling for one-minute changes our state-of-mind, feelings and body language – and is cause-and-effect

for getting promotions, making successful presentations, and acing school,”

she said.

  1. DumAsses work very hard for you to like and accept them – they try to

paste a phony smile on their face – but it’s like a cheap-wig – you just know

who and what they are – and choose to avoid them.

  1. DumAsses are often experts, and given half-a-chance will quote half the

dictionary with its Latin and Greek derivations, then answer all your unasked-questions about the meaning-of-life, politics and child-rearing.

The only response a SmartAss gives – is a wide smile. SmartAsses never

make the other-person wrong.

Let’s repeat this truism because you were in the twilight-zone, thinking of what goodies you will have at lunch or dinner.

“A SmartAss never-never-never makes the other person - wrong!”

  1. Sure, it is easy to agree – but who can suppress the need to point-out the error-of-their-ways to your uninformed friends, associates and relatives.

It just feels so good, so how could it be wrong?

You create enemies who will never forgive you, will inform a minimum of seventeen people that you are the worst form of ingrate, and to never deal

with you because you are unreliable.

“Well, there are almost six and a half billion people on the planet – so who cares about the DumAss and their seventeen dumber friends?”

Those seventeen DAs will each tell another seventeen, and so on – and you

will absolute discover the universal network of DumAsses who can

negatively affect your life and career.

The best reason to never make anyone wrong, especially DAs, is the physical

and mental effect on your own brain-body and spirit.

It is a profound scientific fact that making people wrong leads our

aggressive and territorial instincts to surface and cause us stress and

anxiety, and depression. It raises your blood-pressure, excites your heart-rate,

and makes you hold your breath, adverse respiratory changes.

Yes, really – and making other people wrong – pointing out their

ignorance – never improves them, they cannot accept they are wrong about

anything.

But the confrontation weakens your immune system because you get stressed about confronting a DumAss – and offending him or her.

  1. William James, professor at Harvard in the 1890s proclaimed –

‘The Law of As-If,’ as significant in living and working successfully.”

Sure, it sounds like more of that soft science, but it has been replicated a century later using fMRIs, functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery – brain-scans.

How does this apply to the ‘smile’ of the SmartAsses?

“Act as-if, feel-as-if, believe as-if, and think as-if – you are enjoying yourself,

successful, and have obtained your goals – and it will soon become a reality

in the secular-world.

How come?

Your brain structures do not know the difference between - actuality and

virtual-reality. Your left and right brains will work to actualize what you

mental-visualize, and a smile permits you to function optimally.

When you use the law of ‘as-if’, and confront life as-if you are already

successful, you change the structure and function of both your consciousness

and non-consciousness to a winning-mode. You rewire (reprogram), your

brain.

Here comes another truism – “we cannot decide anything significant without

first visualizing ourselves doing it – in our imagination.”

  1. If you want to be a SmartAss and ace speed reading – keep a smile, a grin,

and a feel-good laugh – handy. If you can smile for 60 seconds – you have

command of the right muscles and neuroconnections.

All the SmartAsses challenge you to keep a baboon-like grin on your face for a single-minute and see what happens.

The result of smiling is - your entire body peps up, your brainwave rhythms,

cycles-per-second of electricity coursing through your brain -

move into alertness, and your breathing, heart-rate, and blood-pressure move into the optimal healthy territory.

What about your immune system?

The fMRI shows a stronger flow of neurotransmitters, particularly

dopamine, the feel-good chemical, and a reduction of cortisol, the stress hormones – so it’s a no-brainer to smile and grin like a baboon.

  1. Now the DumAsses pipe-up – “but what if I don’t feel like smiling?”

Somewhere down the line the DumAsses decided that it looked - professional,

academic and cool, to frown, snarl, be sarcastic, irritable and act hostile.

They have perfected the look and their list of illnesses - mental and physical,

and bad relationships – are the result.

  1. The Law of Liking recites that people do business – have relationships and

help – people they like. And it is not a violation of the Civil Rights law.

Smiling – like an ape – even when you just don’t feel like it - is medicine for

your mind-body and spirit. It attracts other people, success and money-in-the-bank.

Coda: We all manipulate ourselves and everyone whose life we touch – every

waking hour – but we do not choose to exploit - man-woman-or child.

We smile because we choose to, and its reward is health, wealth and usefulness. We smile because we know that with persistence and determination – and pig-headed stubbornness – we will succeed in our

goals – including being expert speed readers.

May we respectfully suggest you forgot to smile – there, now isn’t that better?
